Helen of Troyeville showcase
One of my long-term Angels, Helen Boonzaier, inspired me to write a solo show, Helen of Troyeville (Helen Boonzaier spent some of her early years in Troyeville) based on some of our conversations. Helen is an 80-something dynamo, has lived a rich life and continues to pursue the proverbial bucket list travelling to some of the most remote corners of the world! Written 8 years ago, Helen of Troyeville has never had a run in Cape Town and this looks set to change with Zolie Markey playing the role. Having self-directed her rehearsal process, Zolie presented the work to an audience, fully off-script, on Monday 2 March at the 6 Spin Street Gallery. Afterwards, Nancy Richards facilitated a conversation with Zolie, Helen and myself. It was an evening of useful feedback and the show will continue to be developed till it is set to premiere at the end of March/beginning of April.
